Located in the Community Station in the Soha Building in Didcot, run by Sustainable Didcot, The Green Hub is the town’s Climate Emergency Centre (CEC). Here the community can come together to meet, to learn, to share and discuss how they can work together collectively to build a more sustainable future for the town in which they live as well as in individual homes and businesses.
The name for the CEC was chosen following Sustainable Didcot running a poll to decide the most appropriate name. The venue is the location for a number of regular and other occasional events. These include:
- Didcot Repair Café (monthly, 3rd Saturday of the month).
- Swish (clothes swap) and other swap-not-shop events.
- Workshops – such as how to compost, how to draught proof and retrofit your home, basic sewing machine skills, fermentation and more.
- Film and discussion nights.
There is also a weekly drop-in on Monday afternoons called Skills and Chill, where participants have been learning how to knit and crochet. People have also been taught how to make their own household cleaners and there will be other sustainable activities and workshops announced soon.
Another planned use for part of The Green Hub is the setting up of a ‘Library of Things’ where people will be able to borrow items that are only used occasionally instead of having to buy their own new. This could include tools, household appliances, toys, books and other items.
Sustainable Didcot are also thrilled to have been one of the recipients of the recently announced Didcot Powerhouse Fund’s 2024 grants. This grant will enable them to increase their use of The Green Hub by funding a part-time worker to help deliver more sustainability activities and extend their opening hours.
Stephanie Kendrick from Sustainable Didcot explains just how important this grant funding is to their plans for the future. “This expansion aims to create a more environmentally conscious community and engage a more diverse range of participants interested in learning more about sustainability and environmental concerns.”
We have featured the work of The Didcot Powerhouse Fund many times in the Didcot Town Community Magazine but further information regarding this year’s grant recipients and about the work done by The Didcot Powerhouse Fund can be found at didcotpowerhousefund.co.uk.
If you plan to visit Sustainable Didcot’s Green Hub, you can access it from the rear of the building, through the blue door behind the fire escape stairs in the last Soha car park on the Lydalls Road side. A map to The Green Hub can be found at what3words.com/tiny.hillsides.strongly
