The Future of Wantage Town FC

divider
DSC 0004 1

The 2022/23 season was a period of transition for Wantage Town FC, with changes to the First Team management set-up and the Committee working hard to drive forward plans to improve facilities for players across the entire club. Led by Chair Lesley Furnival, the Committee has seen many new faces join over the last year to ensure that the club has the support it needs, and we hope the community has felt a positive shift with this injection of fresh energy and new ideas.

Football strategy

The new senior men’s management team have been working hard to galvanise the squad, recruit new players and plan for the 2023/24 season, sharing the Chair’s vision of attracting, developing, and retaining local talent. The overall strategy is for players to develop from youth all the way through to the Development and Senior levels with the support and encouragement of our fabulous managers and coaches, with the Club enabling this through the provision of the best possible facilities.

3G Pitch at Alfredian Park

The plans for a new 3G pitch are in place with funding confirmed from the FA; the aim is to have the pitch installed ready for the 2024/25 season. The 3G pitch will enable the football club to provide the best possible facilities for its player, but also to benefit the wider community to serve our town beyond football. A condition of the funding is that the club provides changing facilities for both male and female players across all ages, as well as match officials. This will be self-funded, so the club is organising plenty of social events to fund the build.

Facilities at Crabhill

Another exciting development for Wantage Town FC is plans for three pitches, a MUGA, a new pavilion with two changing rooms, referees’ facilities, and a kitchen at Crabhill – all for use by WTFC. This will be a fantastic facility for our members to use and will help ensure that we never have to turn any child away from playing football. The club will take over the lease of this location once the facilities are completed.

Experienced Coaches have said that the 13- 15 year old teams often struggle as the boys mature. Some have a change of heart and move in a different direction, some become passionate about the game. Some parents bring their lads along to try and give them a focus, a physical outlet or to give them a direction in which to find themselves. Our team has struggled with these challenges and as Coaches we have deliberately sought to develop the team with a focus on the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS).
