If you love singing and would like to be part of a mixed voice choir, the Abingdon Community Choir (ACCord) is the perfect group for you to join. There are currently 50 members including teenagers from 16 years of age and singers of any level of experience are welcome. You do not need to pass an audition or be able to read music so if you a good singing voice, why not have some fun this year?
ACCord was established in Abingdon a decade ago and the choir will be celebrating their 10th anniversary in April. This community choir is run by Abingdon Music Centre, meeting during term time on Tuesday evenings at the Thomas Reade School in Radley Road, Abingdon OX14 3RR. The choir is split into three, sometimes four parts, to enable various harmonies and mixed arrangements of the songs. By not using sheet music and learning written lyrics by rote, this makes ACCord more inclusive. The group covers a broad range of styles including pop, gospel, folk and traditional. Their recent repertoire includes Toto Africa, America from West Side Story, Stand by Me, Make Your Own Kind of Music and Shosholoza, a traditional Zulu song from South Africa.
Over the years ACCord has performed at many local events around Abingdon including AMC Summer Festival, Fun in the Park, Music at the Manor, Christmas Extravaganza, and the AMC Christmas Concert. Their next event is a fundraiser for the Abingdon Passion Play which will be held on the 11 March at Christ Church in Northcourt Road. The evening includes a hog roast and doors open at 5.30pm.
So, if you enjoy singing and want to make new friends who share a common interest, why not book a free taster session? Many people have gained a lot of pleasure from being part of this community choir including Claire: “Since joining ACCord, I have made friends, connected with people from all walks of life within the community and, most of all, had fun. I hadn’t sung with people since I was at school, and ACCord has been so welcoming that my confidence has grown so much. Singing every week with this wonderful group of people has really helped make Abingdon feel like home.”
