High Lodge Farm in Abingdon, Oxfordshire is thrilled to announce its newest seasonal family event, Bale Play in the Barn, running from 14th to 22nd February 2026 during February half-term.
This brand-new indoor adaptation of the outdoor Big Bale Play invites children and families to explore a giant barn filled with mountains of straw bales to climb, scramble and play, whatever the weather.
Running for nine days with three timed play sessions daily (9am–11am, 11:30am–1:30pm, 2pm–4pm), Bale Play in the Barn offers a safe, all-weather adventure for young explorers aged 1–14 years. With designated play spaces for under-5s, small bale play, a sandpit and ride-on toys, there’s something for every age and ability.
Families attending Bale Play in the Barn can also enjoy seasonal favourites like barrel train rides, as well as locally roasted coffee, cakes, toasted sandwiches, hot drinks and snacks while children burn off energy in a fun, farm-themed setting.
Katy Allen-Wright, one of four sisters who run High Lodge Farm, said: “We’re delighted to bring our bale playground indoors for families this February. There’s something completely irresistible about a barn full of straw bales. It’s a bit like soft play, but with the smell of the countryside and the freedom to really explore. Kids can climb, jump, crawl through tunnels, swing, balance and burn off loads of energy in a way that feels like pure adventure. It’s very simple fun and that's why children absolutely love it.”
She added: “The barn has actually been a bit of a behind-the-scenes project for us. We’ve been quietly building it over the past year, mainly to give us some much-needed storage and to support the day-to-day agricultural side of the farm. It’s a working farm building first and foremost, but it's lovely to be able to use a practical farm space in a way that brings so much joy to children, even if it is just for a week.”
High Lodge Farm recommends booking in advance as tickets are limited due to indoor capacity restrictions. Tickets are priced at £7 per child, £3 per adult, with under-1s and carers free (with proof). Entry is allocated to one of the timed sessions to ensure everyone has room to play safely. There are also two SEND sessions for children looking for a quieter experience.
Bale Play in the Barn takes place at a different location on the farm to High Lodge Farm’s other seasonal events. Families should follow directions provided at booking and access the barn via Thame Lane, Culham (postcode OX14 3DX).
