1861 (Wantage) Squadron RAF Air Cadets is a youth organisation sponsored by the RAF, offering young people exciting opportunities for personal and professional development.
Who are we and what do we do?
Formed in October 1941 (the same year the Air Training Corps was formed) Wantage Squadron welcomes young people from all walks of life, from aged 12 years and in school year 8 or above. We provide young people with the opportunity to get active, learn new skills and make new friends in an inspirational and safe environment.
We offer a huge variety of activities from; cyber and space, sports, flying, gliding, archery, climbing, mountain biking, music, target shooting, canoeing, expeditions, RAF/Army station visits, air shows, drill, teamwork and so much more. Activities are open to all, with a focus on enjoying yourself, whilst improving both skills and confidence. We also encourage all our cadets to try everything at least once.
We also provide classroom-based training which often takes place on squadron nights, where you can learn everything from aviation skills to map reading, which can be both enjoyable and challenging. We also partner with organisations such as CVQO, St Johns Ambulance and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, allowing you to gain qualifications to help with your education and career.
There’s a small subscription fee to cover running costs, which comes in at just under £10 a month, making it great value. We also provide the uniforms, with parents only needing to supply the shoes and boots. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7pm to 9.30pm, all year round. You’ll find us just at the top of Icknield Lane, Wantage, OX12 8ES (behind the Scout Hut), and this is best accessed off Ormond Road.
We are on the lookout for adult volunteers too. There are plenty of ways our volunteers help and support the squadron and our cadets. From teaching, to managing stores, office administration, planning events or activities, we have a variety of ways in which you can join us to make a difference. You don’t need any specific qualifications, and we will provide free training, all we need is your time and enthusiasm. We also have a Civilian Welfare Committee, which is like a schools PTA if training or administration is not your cup of tea, and they help fundraise and raise awareness of the squadron.
