Volunteering at this year’s Abingdon Marathon

could raise money for a charity of your choice

2024 Start Line 1

The Abingdon Marathon, which this year takes place on Sunday 19 October, is an event organised by runners for runners. It has gained a reputation for being well-organised, professional and welcoming. Through all of its history the Abingdon Marathon has retained its reputation as one of the best marshalled and organised marathons in the UK.

This year’s Marathon sees over 250 runners from England Athletics and Welsh Athletics participating in their Senior Marathon Championship at the event as the runners take on the 26.2 mile course. As usual, the route passes through Abingdon town centre, heading out on a two-lap course, passing through the picturesque villages of Drayton, Milton and Sutton Courtenay. Runners then head back through Abingdon to Tilsley Park, finishing on the track in front of the grandstand. Unfortunately, the course is unsuitable for unaccompanied wheelchair competitors.

Although the 2025 race is sold out to competitors, organisers are still looking for volunteers to assist with marshalling on the day. They are asking individuals and groups to give up their Sunday to help supervise the course and cheer on the runners. As a thank you, they aim to donate to any organisation or charity of your choice. All you need to do when registering to volunteer is choose which of the nominated charities you would like to support or add your preferred charity.

Groups of friends, family or colleagues are encouraged to join forces as volunteers in order to increase the amount of money you can raise for your chosen charity. Last year’s Abingdon Marathon raised over £20,800 for local charities and organisations. So, if you are a member of a local sports club, why not ask your club to get involved – it’s a great way to raise money for your club.

As well as being able to support local charities, volunteers are all invited to attend the post-race function so the organisers can thank you for donating your time. If you think someone you know is willing to volunteer, please encourage them to register. We need as many marshals as we can get!

If you have been unsuccessful in gaining a place for this year, registration for the 2026 Abingdon Marathon opens in the New Year so, keep a watch on their website abingdonmarathon.org.uk to register.
